Allstate placed last in our ranking of the best insurance companies and has the highest premium rates out of all the companies we reviewed.
Allstate Pros & Cons
- Easy to open policy
- Easy to file claims
- Highest average rates in our survey
- Poor ratings for customer service and customer loyalty
Is Allstate Car Insurance Good?
Allstate has the lowest overall score in our study and therefore may not be a good option for most drivers. We surveyed existing Allstate customers to learn more about their experiences with the company. Our survey revealed that Allstate customers are generally less likely to renew their policy or recommend Allstate to other drivers. Based on that survey, we also found that Allstate also has below-average scores for customer service and claims handling, though received marginally better scores than some of their competitors.
High rates are another reason for consumers to stay away from Allstate. Compared to other insurers we reviewed, Allstate’s average premium rates are the highest and 35% more than the national average.
It’s worth noting that Allstate’s customers were generally satisfied with discount opportunities. When discounts are factored in, some drivers may find that Allstate’s rates become more competitive. If you’re considering Allstate, their easy-to-use free quote function can help you determine they’re a good fit for you.
Allstate Customer Service
Compared to the other auto insurance companies included in our survey, Allstate ranks seventh place for customer service. Only Progressive and Travelers received lower scores. Sixty-two percent of the Allstate customers included in our survey were completely satisfied with their service. An additional 18% were generally satisfied.
While Allstate’s customer service scores aren’t remarkably low on their own, data from our survey shows a significant difference between customer satisfaction rates. Nearly 81% of USAA customers and 71% of State Farm customers reported being completely satisfied with their customer service experience.
Allstate Claims Handling
Allstate performs better in our claims handling category than it does for any other category in our survey. In our list of Best Insurers for Claims Handling, Allstate ranks sixth out of nine, beating out Travelers, Progressive, and American Family.
Among the customers surveyed, nearly 55% report being completely satisfied with their Allstate claims handling experience, and nearly 22% reported being generally satisfied. However, several companies received much stronger claims handling scores, with USAA (76%), Nationwide(74%), and Geico (71%) leading the pack.
Company Customer Loyalty
Allstate ranks ninth for our Best Insurer for Customer Loyalty category, placing it behind all other car insurance companies in our survey. Though there are several reasons a customer may choose not to renew their policy, our survey revealed that lower rates and a strong customer-first approach are likely linked to high customer loyalty scores. Allstate’s poor customer satisfaction scores and high insurance rates likely contributed to their low customer loyalty rankings.
Of the customers we surveyed, only 36% were very likely to renew their policy with Allstate. This is a stark contrast to top performers in this category. For instance, 71% of USAA customers and 75% of State Farm customers were very likely to renew their policy.
It’s not uncommon for any insurance company to receive complaints about rates, customer service, and claims handling. Allstate customers voiced many of those typical complaints.
Respondents who were not happy with their Allstate experience frequently expressed issues with slow response times and difficulty getting in touch with their agent.
- “Slow to respond”
- “Don’t feel that customer is priority”
- “The local agency was great. The claim center did not communicate thoroughly “
- “Just difficult getting responses in a timely manner”

How We Created This Allstate Car Insurance Review
At U.S. News, we’re all about helping people make life’s important decisions. Our college rankings, launched in 1983, set the standard in educational rankings. Our rankings in other fields, like healthcare, government, and the automotive sphere, help people and thought leaders make choices that make lives better. Now we’re continuing to empower you with the information you need to make the right choices for your life with our Best Car Insurance Rankings.
We surveyed 4,806 consumers who filed a car insurance claim or started a new auto insurance policy in the last five years, asking questions about their car insurance company. Of the survey respondents, 278 filed a claim with Geico, and 381 started a policy with Geico. These questions covered satisfaction with the ease of filing a claim, customer service, claim status communication, claim resolution, and overall value. In general, questions for consumers who have filed a claim were given more weight than questions for consumers who have only opened a policy. We also asked whether they’d recommend the company and if they planned to renew their policy. We used their responses to build our Best Car Insurance Companies Rankings, as well as our sub-rankings: Best Car Insurance Companies – Customer Service, Best Car Insurance Companies – Claims Handling, and Best Car Insurance Companies – Customer Loyalty, and this company profile.
Our Study Rates
To get comparative insurance rates for this study, U.S. News also worked with Quadrant Information Services to analyze a report of insurance rates in all 50 states from most of the largest national car insurance companies, though not every company operates in every state. Quadrant obtained publicly available rate data that car insurers file with state regulators. Our study rates are based on profiles for both male and female drivers aged 17, 25, and 60. Vehicles used include the 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150, with annual mileage ranging from 6,000 and 12,000. Three car insurance coverage levels were used, as were credit tiers of good, fair, and poor. Clean driving records and records with one accident, one speeding violation, and one DUI were also used in the calculations of certain driver archetypes.
To get the study rates shown here, we computed the mean rate for male and female drivers aged 25, 35, and 60 who drive 12,000 miles per year and have medium coverage, good credit, and a clean driving record. The rates shown here are for comparative purposes only and should not be considered “average” rates available by individual insurers. Because car insurance rates are based on individual factors, your car insurance rates will differ from the rates shown here.
