Farmers lands fifth in our survey and performs well in the areas of customer service and claims handling, but also has the second-highest auto insurance rates of the companies we rank.

Farmers Pros & Cons

  • Ranks highly for positive claim experience
  • Strong scores for ease of opening a policy
  • Strong customer service scores

  • Premium rates are higher than the national average
  • Below average customer loyalty scores

Is Farmers Car Insurance Good?

3.96 out of 5

Farmers is not the best option for an insurance policy for the average driver. Farmers car insurance ranked fifth out of the nine auto insurance providers we reviewed in our survey. Overall, Farmers customers are satisfied with their customer service and claims handling experiences, but that isn’t enough to place Farmers at or near the top of our ranking.

One common issue revealed in our rating and customer survey analysis is the cost of a policy with Farmers. When compared to national average rates as determined by our study, Farmers comes in eighth out of nine, making them one of the most expensive insurance providers in our rankings. Their rates are about 27% higher than the national average and 49% to 87% more expensive than the cheapest rates in our study.

While ranking may vary based on driver demographics – age, credit history, driving history, etc. – Farmers rarely inches up past eighth place. One exception, however, is our study’s insurance rates for drivers with a DUI on their record. In this case, Farmers creeps up to sixth place, as Allstate, Geico, and Nationwide all have higher average rates for drivers with a DUI infraction.

Farmers Customer Service

Our survey reveals that Farmers customers generally have a positive customer experience. A full 80% of Farmers policyholders who had never filed a claim give high customer satisfaction ratings. That number dips to 71% for drivers who have filed a claim.

Overall, Farmers auto insurance still manages to rank highly for customer service, placing fourth out of the nine companies we analyzed. USAA leads the pack for customer service, followed by State Farm and Nationwide.

Farmers Claims Handling

Our recent survey revealed that Farmers customers generally had a positive customer experience. A full 80% of Farmer policyholders who had never filed a claim gave high customer satisfaction ratings. That number dipped to 71% for drivers who had filed an auto claim.

Overall, Farmers auto insurance manages to rank highly for customer service, placing fourth out of the nine companies we analyzed. USAA leads the pack for customer service, followed by State Farm and Nationwide.

Farmers Customer Loyalty

Despite generally positive feedback regarding Farmers’ customer service and claims handling, this insurer ranks sixth out of nine for customer loyalty. Our survey finds that Farmers’ customer-first approach to claims handling increases loyalty among those who had filed a claim.

Of customers who had not filed a claim, 57% said they were likely or very likely to recommend Farmers to someone looking for auto insurance, though 33% didn’t feel strongly one way or another. The number of customers who would recommend Farmers rises to 70% among customers who filed a claim.

When asked if they would renew their policy with Farmers, 71% of those who filed a claim said it was likely or very likely that they’d renew their policy. Combined, these stats align with the positive claims handling feedback we received.

Farmers Complaints

As is the case with any auto insurance company, Farmers customer complaints varied, with some specifying poor experiences with agents, communication, available discounts, and general customer service. However, one of the most prominent complaints was centered on premium rates. That sentiment aligns with our overall findings, which revealed Farmers as one of the most expensive car insurance policy providers in our study.

The following are a sample of the rate-driven complaints submitted by respondents:

  • “No substantial multiple car discounts.”
  • “Price and service are not helpful.”
  • “Found better prices elsewhere.”
  • “Too overpriced.”
  • “They were way overcharging.”

How Much Is Farmers Car Insurance?

When compared to national car insurance rates, Farmers has one of the highest rates among the companies included in our survey. On average, Farmers car insurance costs $1,635 a year. Compared to the national average of $1,321, that’s $314 more annually.

While reviewing Farmers’ average rates, we also found that this company’s insurance premiums are typically high across the board, regardless of age, credit rating, annual mileage, and driving record. Drivers with a single DUI offense, however, may find Farmers to have lower rates than some of the other auto insurance companies in our study, specifically when compared to Allstate, Nationwide, and American Family Insurance.

Even if Farmers’ rates are higher than the national average, if you’re shopping for car insurance, it may be worth it to get a free rates quote. Car insurance rates vary based on several factors, including your driving record, city or zip code, the type of car you drive, and your age and gender. As such, you may find that Farmers’ average rates are not representative of your individualized rate.

Farmers Rates After a DUI

Still, their rates are nearly 46% more than State Farm’s rates, which are the least expensive in our survey.

How Much Is High Coverage Car Insurance With Farmers?

National Average$1,397

A high coverage auto insurance policy with Farmers is just over 25% more than the national average, and only marginally cheaper than Allstate, which has the most expensive rates for full coverage. Our study suggests that drivers looking for full coverage may find significantly lower rates with USAA, Geico, or State Farm.

National Average$1,248

Minimum coverage auto insurance may seem like the cheapest option, but some drivers may find that a minimum coverage policy with Farmers is still more expensive than a higher level of coverage with other companies in our study.

Farmers Car Insurance Discounts

Farmers offer many of the same discounts as their competitors, including discounts for student drivers, safe drivers, and drivers who sign up for and use Signal, Farmers’ safe driving app program. Some drivers may also be eligible for policy savings based on their employer, professional memberships, or military status.

Existing Farmers auto insurance customers are generally pleased with their access to discounts, with about 60% responding that they were satisfied or very satisfied with available discounts. That said, other companies in our survey had higher discount satisfaction ratings when compared to Farmers. It’s also worth noting that Farmers does not currently offer a loyalty discount, which may be disappointing to customers who want credit for remaining with the same company over time.

How We Found the Best Car Insurance Companies

At U.S. News, we’re all about helping people make life’s important decisions. Our college rankings, launched in 1983, set the standard in educational rankings. Our rankings in other fields, like healthcare, government, and the automotive sphere, help people and thought leaders make choices that make lives better. Now we’re continuing to empower you with the information you need to make the right choices for your life with our Best Car Insurance Rankings.

We surveyed 4,806 consumers who filed a car insurance claim or started a new auto insurance policy in the last five years, asking questions about their car insurance company. Of the survey respondents, 70 filed a claim with Farmers and 91 started a policy with Farmers. These questions covered satisfaction with the ease of filing a claim, customer service, claim status communication, claim resolution, and overall value. In general, questions for consumers who have filed a claim were given more weight than questions for consumers who have only opened a policy.

We also asked whether they’d recommend the company and if they planned to renew their policy. We used their responses to build our Best Car Insurance Companies Rankings, as well as our sub-rankings: Best Car Insurance Companies – Customer Service, Best Car Insurance Companies – Claims Handling, and Best Car Insurance Companies – Customer Loyalty, and this company profile.

Our Study Rates

To get comparative insurance rates for this study, U.S. News also worked with Quadrant Information Services to analyze a report of insurance rates in all 50 states from most of the largest national car insurance companies, though not every company operates in every state. Quadrant obtained publicly available rate data that car insurers file with state regulators. Our study rates are based on profiles for both male and female drivers aged 17, 25, and 60. Vehicles used include the 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150, with annual mileage ranging from 6,000 and 12,000. Three car insurance coverage levels were used, as were credit tiers of good, fair, and poor. Clean driving records and records with one accident, one speeding violation, and one DUI were also used in the calculations of certain driver archetypes.

To get the study rates shown here, we computed the mean rate for male and female drivers aged 25, 35, and 60 who drive 12,000 miles per year and have medium coverage, good credit, and a clean driving record. The rates shown here are for comparative purposes only and should not be considered “average” rates available by individual insurers. Because car insurance rates are based on individual factors, your car insurance rates will differ from the rates shown here.
