Geico Car Insurance Review for 2022

Geico places third in our ranking of the best car insurance companies, and scores highly for customer service, with policyholders saying they are likely to recommend Geico to others.

Geico Pros & Cons

  • Overall average premiums are among the lowest we found
  • Most customers are likely to recommend Geico to friends and family
  • Competitive rates for drivers with a poor credit history

  • Customers complain that claims processing is inconsistent
  • Very high rates for drivers with a DUI

Is Geico Car Insurance Good?

Yes, Geico is a good car insurance company for most drivers. Our annual study of car insurance rates found Geico is one of the cheapest car insurers in the country, coming in second in our ranking of the Cheapest Car Insurance Companies, and it manages to keep premiums low while still offering good customer service. Furthermore, our customer satisfaction survey found that Geico’s customers are among the most likely to recommend the company’s auto insurance to friends and family. Geico took third place in our Best Car Insurance Companies Ranking.

Since Geico’s rates are very competitive, available data reveals that most motorists can likely save money with Geico if they don’t qualify for USAA insurance, which restricts its membership to military personnel and their families. Younger drivers and individuals with spotty credit histories are especially good candidates for saving money with Geico, though we found high rates for people with infractions on their driving record.

Geico ranks third in our list of the best auto insurance companies. Many respondents cite “solid service and coverage [options]” as reasons for awarding high scores, and the “ease of online policy administration” and other easy-to-use features are among the standout attributes of Geico’s auto insurance policies.

Geico Customer Service

In our Best Insurer for Customer Service subranking, Geico ties with Farmers for fourth place. USAA leads the pack among auto insurance companies in this area, and State Farm and Nationwide hold a slight edge over Geico in customer satisfaction. The midpack ranking doesn’t tell the whole story, however, as survey respondents were overall happy with their experiences. Of survey respondents who did not file a car insurance claim with Geico, 53% indicated complete satisfaction with the ease of contacting Geico’s customer service. Among respondents who filed a claim, that number rose to 70%.

Geico Claims Handling

Though respondents to our survey report strong customer satisfaction with Geico auto insurance overall, there are some weak spots. When it comes to claims handling, Geico loses some ground to key competitors with middle-of-the-pack performance. Of survey respondents who filed a claim, 74% report complete satisfaction with the ease of filing, 66% report complete satisfaction with status updates during the claims process, and 70% report complete satisfaction with the resolution of the claim. Though these scores sound good, they’re beaten by competitors such as USAA and Nationwide. One survey respondent said, “Outside of the claim process, yes, Geico has good customer service. During the claim process, no. Geico has abysmal customer service.”

Geico Customer Loyalty

With an overall third-place ranking in our customer satisfaction survey, it should come as no surprise that Geico enjoys strong loyalty from its car insurance policyholders. Geico earns the silver medal in our Most Likely to be Recommended subranking, and a fourth-place spot in our Best Insurer for Customer Loyalty subranking. Geico’s customer-first approach to service resulted in 41% of respondents who had not filed a claim saying they would be very likely to recommend Geico. Among those who had filed a claim, that number went up to 49%.

Geico Complaints

Though most Geico auto insurance customers are happy with their policy, some expressed issues with customer satisfaction. A few of our survey respondents were unhappy with claims resolution, while others mentioned dissatisfaction over rising rates. However, these issues are typical among the car insurance companies in our survey.

  • “Their insurance has risen in past years but I have a very clean record. I would like to check other companies just to see if I am still getting the best deal.”
  • “Too expensive, no sizeable discount during quarantine or low mileage.”
  • “Too expensive. Starts off at a reasonable cost, then rates rise rapidly.”
  • “My daughter also had Geico and when she had an accident they dropped her as a customer.”

How Much Is Geico Car Insurance?

Our annual study of the Cheapest Car Insurance Companies found that most people can save money with a Geico auto insurance policy, even taking into account variables such as driving record and zip code.

According to our data, Geico’s average auto insurance rate is $1,100, making it the second-cheapest car insurer in our study. The only cheaper major company for auto insurance is USAA, which has an average rate of $875, which is a decrease of about 20% compared to Geico’s rate. The national average in our study is $1,321, which is a 20% increase compared to Geico’s average rates.

Your car insurance rates quote will vary based on your specific situation. For example, Geico does have expensive rates for people with certain driving infractions on their record.

Geico Car Insurance for You

Geico Rates for Teen Drivers

National Average$4,515$5,140

As any parent of a young driver will know, teens have the highest car insurance rates. Geico is no exception, though this insurer’s average study rates for teen drivers represent significant savings compared to the national average and to most competitors.

Geico Rates for Young Adults

National Average$1,487$1,554

Our study shows that Geico’s average rates for 25-year-old men and women are lower than the rates from most major competitors, as well as the national average. However, men in this age group, and in general, typically pay more than women, so it’s notable that Geico’s study rates don’t follow this trend.

Geico Rates for Seniors

National Average$1,149$1,183

Senior drivers tend to have the lowest auto insurance rates across the board, and our study shows that Geico offers this demographic some of the most competitive premiums. These rates are lower than the national average and all major competitors except USAA.

Geico Rates for Drivers With Poor Credit

National Average$2,227

Our study shows that regardless of credit history, Geico is a great choice for most drivers. Most insurers heavily penalize drivers with low credit scores, but Geico’s average rates for this group are cheaper than all major competitors besides USAA and about 30% less than the national average.

Geico Rates for Good Drivers

National Average$1,321

It’s common sense that good drivers are typically rewarded with the best rates, and it’s backed up by our study data. Geico drivers with a clean driving record save compared to the national average found by our study, compared to most competitors, and compared to drivers with infractions on their records.

Geico Rates After a Speeding Ticket

National Average$1,604

Drivers with a heavy foot can almost certainly expect to pay more for car insurance. Our study shows that Geico’s rate is still better than most for this group of motorists, with just USAA and State Farm coming in cheaper.

Geico Rates After an Accident

National Average$1,872

Geico still has some of the cheapest rates for drivers with one accident, according to our study, but the savings aren’t quite as significant for this group. Geico is still cheaper than the national average, but not by as much, and a few other major insurance companies have lower average rates.

Geico Rates After a DUI

National Average$2,112

Drivers with a DUI won’t find cheap rates here. In fact, Geico has the highest average rate for this group of motorists of all the companies in our study, with a whopping 158% increase over Geico’s rate for drivers with a clean record.

How Much Is High Coverage Car Insurance With Geico?

National Average$1,397

If you’re considering upgrading your insurance coverage from your state’s required minimum, Geico is again a good bet, with a study rate that’s less than the national average and less than every main competitor except for USAA.

How Much Is Minimum Coverage Car Insurance With Geico?

National Average$1,248

According to our study, Geico is the second cheapest car insurance company for drivers who are shopping for minimum coverage. Only USAA is cheaper.

Geico Car Insurance Discounts

Geico offers most of the discounts common across the auto insurance industry, such as multi-policy, multi-vehicle, safety and anti-theft equipment, safe driver and good driving record, and employer affiliation discounts. More than half of our survey respondents were happy with Geico’s discount offerings, with about two-thirds giving the company a four or five on our five-point scale. That’s good, though some rivals scored higher. Some survey respondents commented that they weren’t aware of Geico’s discounts, so it’s important to always check and claim any discounts that you may qualify for. Note that discounts may vary by state.

How We Created This Geico Car Insurance Review

At U.S. News, we’re all about helping people make life’s important decisions. Our college rankings, launched in 1983, set the standard in educational rankings. Our rankings in other fields, like healthcare, government, and the automotive sphere, help people and thought leaders make choices that make lives better. Now we’re continuing to empower you with the information you need to make the right choices for your life with our Best Car Insurance Rankings.

We surveyed 4,806 consumers who filed a car insurance claim or started a new auto insurance policy in the last five years, asking questions about their car insurance company. Of the survey respondents, 278 filed a claim with Geico, and 381 started a policy with Geico. These questions covered satisfaction with the ease of filing a claim, customer service, claim status communication, claim resolution, and overall value. In general, questions for consumers who have filed a claim were given more weight than questions for consumers who have only opened a policy. We also asked whether they’d recommend the company and if they planned to renew their policy. We used their responses to build our Best Car Insurance Companies Rankings, as well as our sub-rankings: Best Car Insurance Companies – Customer Service, Best Car Insurance Companies – Claims Handling, and Best Car Insurance Companies – Customer Loyalty, and this company profile.

Our Study Rates

To get comparative insurance rates for this study, U.S. News also worked with Quadrant Information Services to analyze a report of insurance rates in all 50 states from most of the largest national car insurance companies, though not every company operates in every state. Quadrant obtained publicly available rate data that car insurers file with state regulators. Our study rates are based on profiles for both male and female drivers aged 17, 25, and 60. Vehicles used include the 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150, with annual mileage ranging from 6,000 and 12,000. Three car insurance coverage levels were used, as were credit tiers of good, fair, and poor. Clean driving records and records with one accident, one speeding violation, and one DUI were also used in the calculations of certain driver archetypes.

To get the study rates shown here, we computed the mean rate for male and female drivers aged 25, 35, and 60 who drive 12,000 miles per year and have medium coverage, good credit, and a clean driving record. The rates shown here are for comparative purposes only and should not be considered “average” rates available by individual insurers. Because car insurance rates are based on individual factors, your car insurance rates will differ from the rates shown here.
