  • Not likely to be recommended or renewed by current clients

Is Nationwide Car Insurance Good?

Our annual rates study and customer satisfaction survey show that Nationwide is a decent choice for a car insurance company for most motorists. Nationwide earns fourth place in our Best Car Insurance Rankings, ahead of Allstate, Travelers, Progressive, American Family and Farmers. Nationwide earns fifth place in our ranking of the Cheapest Car Insurance Companies, ahead of Progressive, American Family, Farmers and Allstate.

In most driver demographics we studied, Nationwide offers competitive rates that are often cheaper than the national average. In our survey of real Nationwide customers, most indicated satisfaction with Nationwide’s customer service, though our survey also found that the company lags behind most competitors with fewer consumers likely to renew their policies or recommend Nationwide to their friends and family.

Nationwide Customer Service

In our Best Insurer for Customer Service subranking, Nationwide earns third place behind State Farm. Customer service is a bright spot for Nationwide policyholders, as it’s one of the areas in which Nationwide earned the highest scores. Of the survey respondents who did not file a car insurance claim with Nationwide, 47% indicated complete satisfaction with the ease of contacting customer service. Of those respondents who filed a claim, 72% were completely satisfied with the customer service provided by Nationwide.

Nationwide Claims Handling

According to our survey, Nationwide is the second-best auto insurance company for claims handling. Of survey respondents who had not filed a claim with Nationwide, about 47% said they were completely satisfied with the experience. Of respondents who have filed a claim, the satisfaction level increases to about 76% of respondents saying they were completely satisfied with the ease of filing a claim.

Nationwide Customer Loyalty

Nationwide lands midpack in our survey for customer loyalty. Survey respondents gave Nationwide below-average scores when asked if they were likely to renew their policies or recommend to others. Of respondents who had not filed a claim, 26% said they are very likely to recommend Nationwide. Of respondents who filed a claim, 28% said they are very likely to recommend Nationwide and 44% are very likely to renew their policy.

Nationwide Complaints

According to survey respondents, Nationwide is prone to raising rates. This is one of the most common complaints expressed by policyholders. Other survey respondents noted that it’s important to understand what is included in your coverage.

  • “I’m way overpaying, considering the number of claims I’ve filed in the last 10 years – two. They’ve made a bundle from me and all they’ve done is jack up the rates. Now I’m driving about 3,000 miles a year or less.”
  • “Not the best when you total loss a car, rental insurance is separate and not included in full coverage.”
  • “My wife recently passed away. I notified Nationwide and found my rates would go up. Why? I have not had an accident in five years when my neighbor backed into me coming out of her driveway. I have been a customer of Nationwide for over 20 years, always paid my premiums on time, never had an accident, and I keep my car kept up, but my insurance increased over $80 a month. I just don’t understand.”

How We Created This Nationwide Car Insurance Review

At U.S. News, we’re all about helping people make life’s important decisions. Our college rankings, launched in 1983, set the standard in educational rankings. Our rankings in other fields, like healthcare, government, and the automotive sphere, help people and thought leaders make choices that make lives better. Now we’re continuing to empower you with the information you need to make the right choices for your life with our Best Car Insurance Rankings.

We surveyed 4,806 consumers who filed a car insurance claim or started a new auto insurance policy in the last five years, asking questions about their car insurance company. Of the survey respondents, 50 filed a claim with Nationwide and 47 started a policy with Nationwide. These questions covered satisfaction with the ease of filing a claim, customer service, claim status communication, claim resolution, and overall value. In general, questions for consumers who have filed a claim were given more weight than questions for consumers who have only opened a policy. We also asked whether they’d recommend the company and if they planned to renew their policy. We used their responses to build our Best Car Insurance Companies Rankings, as well as our sub-rankings: Best Car Insurance Companies – Customer Service, Best Car Insurance Companies – Claims Handling, and Best Car Insurance Companies – Customer Loyalty, and this company profile.

Our Study Rates

To get comparative insurance rates for this study, U.S. News also worked with Quadrant Information Services to analyze a report of insurance rates in all 50 states from most of the largest national car insurance companies, though not every company operates in every state. Quadrant obtained publicly available rate data that car insurers file with state regulators. Our study rates are based on profiles for both male and female drivers aged 17, 35, and 60. Vehicles used include the 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150, with annual mileage ranging from 6,000 and 12,000. Three car insurance coverage levels were used, as were credit tiers of good, fair, and poor. Clean driving records and records with one accident, one speeding violation, and one DUI were also used in the calculations of certain driver archetypes.

To get the study rates shown here, we computed the mean rate for male and female drivers aged 25, 35, and 60 who drive 12,000 miles per year and have medium coverage, good credit, and a clean driving record. The rates shown here are for comparative purposes only and should not be considered “average” rates available by individual insurers. Because car insurance rates are based on individual factors, your car insurance rates will differ from the rates shown here.
