Porn star warns it’s ‘harder for ex-performers to find new job than for criminals’

Cherie DeVille rose to the top of the porn industry after she quitting her job as a physical therapist, but she has warned that others might not find the transition into adult work so easy

A porn star has warned aspiring adult performers from following in her footsteps, and stressed there is not a lot of money to be made from starring in X-rated videos.

Cherie DeVille left her physical therapy job to work in porn after an industry agent spotted her modelling work and she decided that she would “have fun banging”.

The 43 year-old has gone on to become one of the adult industry’s biggest stars, winning industry awards for her starring roles as a MILF and garnering over 3.6million followers on Instagram.

But despite her success, Cherie took the opportunity to address the dark side of porn while appearing on the No Jumper podcast, warning that it can be difficult for actors to make money after leaving the industry.

“We don’t get a big piece of the pie if we’re shooting for studios, that’s for sure,” she said.

“Traditionally in adult content, unlike a lot of other entertainment, there’s no residuals; you go to work, you get paid for that day of work, you get your paycheck and that’s it.”

As well as the initial income sources being limited for porn stars, Cherie stressed that performers’ lifestyles can sometimes be negatively impacted by a lack of career prospects once they have retired from the spotlight.

“Porn performers have a ridiculously short lifespan… If you think you’re going to work for like 5 years, which would be an almost miraculously long lifespan, you have to take whatever money you think you’re going to make in those years and make sure that money lasts you pretty much the rest of your life,” she continued.

“Unless you’re incredibly entrepreneurial, people don’t hire retired performers for the most part, at least not in high end jobs.

“So I think that’s really something that anyone looking to get into the industry has to think about.”

As a result, Cherie emphasised that while it is possible to make decent money for a few years, those planning on working in the industry should carefully consider what they might hope to do after they retire from adult work.

“I think it’s statistically harder to get a job as a retired female porn star specifically than it is for a convict to get a job,” she claimed.

“I love my job, and I’d do it again, but I’d discourage people from getting into it.”
