Travelers Car Insurance Review for 2022

Though Travelers has below average rates for car insurance, the company lands near the bottom of our ranking of the best insurers based on its low scores in our customer satisfaction survey.

Travelers Pros & Cons

  • Rates are below average for most driver demographics

  • Low scores for customer satisfaction
  • Second-to-last place in our Best Car Insurance Companies rankings

Is Travelers Car Insurance Good?

Though Travelers may catch your eye with competitive auto insurance rates, potential customers should proceed with caution. In our ranking of the Best Car Insurance Companies, Travelers comes in second to last, behind all major competitors except Allstate.

Travelers policyholders who responded to our customer satisfaction survey indicated that customer service and claims resolution are weak spots in the Travelers experience, and that low rates do not necessarily result in good value, despite a finish in the top half of our Cheapest Car Insurance Companies ranking.

Travelers Customer Service

In our Best Insurer for Customer Service subranking, Travelers lands at the bottom, where it ties with Progressive. Travelers scored low across the board in survey questions related to customer satisfaction, and it’s worth noting that of the two Travelers customer groups that responded to our survey, scores were lower among customers who had filed a claim than those who had not.

Travelers Claims Handling

In our Best Insurer for Claims Handling subranking, Travelers gains a bit of ground, climbing past Progressive and American Family, but still trails behind the six other major auto insurers we rank. Of survey respondents who filed a claim with Travelers, 67% report complete satisfaction with the ease of filing a claim, 60% report complete satisfaction with status updates during the claims process, and 59% report complete satisfaction with the resolution of the claim. These satisfaction scores are at least several percentage points lower than key competitors.

Travelers Customer Loyalty

Travelers beats out just two competitors, Progressive and Allstate, in our evaluation of customer loyalty. Only about 45% of respondents who had filed a claim with Travelers indicated that they are very likely to renew their policy.

Travelers Complaints

Travelers customers who responded to our survey had the opportunity to share feedback about their experiences with the company. Although Travelers has relatively affordable average car insurance rates, according to our study, many respondents feel they pay too much. Customer service is also a pain point with Travelers customers.

  • “After only one month with them, they upped my insurance.”
  • “The rates are ridiculous for my age, driving record and distance I drive.”
  • “I should get a discount for not having an accident for 35 years.”
  • “They are quick to cancel you if a payment has been delayed, even if it was the bank’s fault. And quick to cancel if you file a claim.”

How Much Is Travelers Car Insurance?

Our study shows that Travelers auto insurance rates are below average for many of the driver demographics we evaluate, but it’s not the cheapest for any group. Travelers comes in with an average annual rate of $1,251, which represents a savings of about 5% compared to the national average. Keep in mind that your specific situation will have variables that affect the rate you will pay.

Travelers Car Insurance for You

Travelers Rates for Teen Drivers

National Average$4,515$5,140

Our study confirms the conventional wisdom that teen drivers face the highest auto insurance rates. With Travelers, teens pay rates that are far higher than those for older drivers. Teen females insured with Travelers have a rate that’s less than the national average, but teen males pay a few bucks more than the national average.

Travelers Rates for Young Adults

National Average$1,487$1,554

Travelers has competitive rates for young adult drivers. Men and women in this age group both save about 10% with Travelers when compared to the national average.

Travelers Rates for Seniors

National Average$1,149$1,183

When it comes to senior drivers, the savings are a little less than we found for teen and young adult drivers. It’s typical for adult drivers to pay lower rates than younger drivers, but our study found Travelers’ rates for seniors aren’t much different from the national average.

Travelers Rates for Drivers With Poor Credit

National Average$2,227

Most auto insurance companies in our study penalize drivers with a spotty credit history, but Travelers is a relatively good choice for this group. Not only are Travelers’ average rates slightly less than the national average for this demographic, but Travelers doesn’t increase rates as much between good and poor credit tiers as most competitors.

Travelers Rates for Good Drivers

National Average$1,321

If you want cheap car insurance, it pays to maintain a clean driving record, and Travelers is no exception. Travelers policyholders with no infractions enjoy the lowest rates, and this company’s rate for this group is lower than the national average.

Travelers Rates After a Speeding Ticket

National Average$1,604

Travelers is the fourth-cheapest auto insurance company in our study for drivers with a speeding ticket, with a rate that’s slightly more expensive than the national average for this group.

Travelers Rates After an Accident

National Average$1,872

For drivers with an accident on the record, Travelers comes in midpack of the companies we study, but the average rate still represents savings compared to the national average for this group.

Travelers Rates After a DUI

National Average$2,112

For drivers with one DUI, the study rate from Travelers comes in about midpack. Still, the Travelers average rate is cheaper than the national average for this group of drivers.

How Much Is High Coverage Car Insurance With Travelers?

National Average$1,397

For a high level of car insurance coverage, Travelers comes in with a rate that’s just below the national average and competitive with the other major car insurance companies we researched.

How Much Is Minimum Coverage Car Insurance With Travelers?

National Average$1,248

Minimum coverage car insurance might sound like a good way to save money, and again, Travelers offers competitive rates compared to the other companies in our rankings and the national average. Keep in mind, however, that the difference is only $154 per year or about $13 per month. In the event of a crash, those slightly higher premiums may be worth it in exchange for better coverage.

How We Created This Travelers Car Insurance Review

At U.S. News, we’re all about helping people make life’s important decisions. Our college rankings, launched in 1983, set the standard in educational rankings. Our rankings in other fields, like healthcare, government, and the automotive sphere, help people and thought leaders make choices that make lives better. Now we’re continuing to empower you with the information you need to make the right choices for your life with our Best Car Insurance Rankings.

We surveyed 4,806 consumers who filed a car insurance claim or started a new auto insurance policy in the last five years, asking questions about their car insurance company. Of the survey respondents, 58 filed a claim with Travelers and 81 started a policy with Travelers. These questions covered satisfaction with the ease of filing a claim, customer service, claim status communication, claim resolution, and overall value. In general, questions for consumers who have filed a claim were given more weight than questions for consumers who have only opened a policy. We also asked whether they’d recommend the company and if they planned to renew their policy. We used their responses to build our Best Car Insurance Companies Rankings, as well as our sub-rankings: Best Car Insurance Companies – Customer Service, Best Car Insurance Companies – Claims Handling, and Best Car Insurance Companies – Customer Loyalty, and this company profile.

Our Study Rates

To get comparative insurance rates for this study, U.S. News also worked with Quadrant Information Services to analyze a report of insurance rates in all 50 states from most of the largest national car insurance companies, though not every company operates in every state. Quadrant obtained publicly available rate data that car insurers file with state regulators. Our study rates are based on profiles for both male and female drivers aged 17, 35, and 60. Vehicles used include the 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150, with annual mileage ranging from 6,000 and 12,000. Three car insurance coverage levels were used, as were credit tiers of good, fair, and poor. Clean driving records and records with one accident, one speeding violation, and one DUI were also used in the calculations of certain driver archetypes.

To get the study rates shown here, we computed the mean rate for male and female drivers aged 25, 35, and 60 who drive 12,000 miles per year and have medium coverage, good credit, and a clean driving record. The rates shown here are for comparative purposes only and should not be considered “average” rates available by individual insurers. Because car insurance rates are based on individual factors, your car insurance rates will differ from the rates shown here.
