USAA Car Insurance Review for 2022

USAA beats the competition thanks to its low rates and high scores for customer satisfaction, claims handling and loyalty.

USAA Pros & Cons

  • Lowest national average rates
  • Strong customer service scores
  • Strong claims handling scores

  • Only available to current or past military members and their immediate family

Is USAA Car Insurance Good?

Yes, USAA car insurance is a good option for drivers who are eligible for USAA membership. At $875 a year, USAA has the lowest average rates compared to the other auto insurance companies we reviewed and ranks first in our Best Insurance survey. They also have the lowest rates for nearly every driver demographic group, except drivers who have a DUI on their record.

Rates weren’t the only factor that helped USAA secure the number one spot in our survey. They also received the top scores for every subcategory we reviewed, including customer service, claims handling, and customer loyalty.

While USAA car insurance has low rates and high survey scores, not all drivers are eligible for coverage. To purchase insurance through USAA, you must be eligible for USAA membership, which is limited to active and veteran military service members and their families.

If you’re looking for cheap car insurance but aren’t eligible for USAA membership, you may want to consider Geico or State Farm. They place second and third for lowest rates, respectively. Learn more in our guide to the best cheap car insurance, Cheapest Car Insurance Companies of 2022.

USAA Customer Service

USAA ranks first in our Best Insurer for Customer Service survey. Just over 80% of their customers report being completely satisfied with their customer service. An additional 9% of respondents report being somewhat satisfied with their car insurance customer service.

USAA’s solid customer service scores gave them a significant lead over other insurers we reviewed. State Farm auto insurance claims a second-place ranking, with 71% of their customers reporting complete satisfaction with customer service. That’s still a strong score, but it is a nine point drop from USAA’s score.

USAA Claims Handling

USAA maintains strong claims handling scores, earning them another first-place spot in our survey. Around 81% of survey respondents report that USAA’s claims filing process is very easy, and 74% are completely satisfied with how their claim was resolved. USAA customers are also generally pleased with claims-based communications, with 71% reporting complete satisfaction with the updates they received during the claims handling process.

Though USAA maintains the top scores for this performance category, it’s worth noting that Nationwide isn’t far behind. Overall, 74% of Nationwide customers are completely satisfied with their claims experience, giving USAA some healthy competition.

USAA Customer Loyalty

USAA’s strong customer satisfaction scores pave the way for similar customer loyalty scores. Just over 76% of survey respondents said they are “very likely” to renew their policy with USAA, with an additional 15% stating they were “likely” to renew. USAA’s customer-first approach yields strong scores in our Most Likely to Recommend category. According to survey results, 86% of respondents would recommend USAA to other drivers shopping for car insurance.

Overall, other insurers, like State Farm, American Family, and Geico, have high marks for customer loyalty, but when it comes to complete customer satisfaction, they all trail USAA.

USAA Complaints

Most auto insurance companies receive at least some complaints, and USAA is no exception. Despite USAA’s typically positive scores in customer service and claims handling, some customers expressed concerns about declining service or poor communication.

  • “Very polite but Always a problem Or miscommunication”
  • “Customer service was ok but managers did not return calls no communication”
  • “CS at USAA simply is not what it used to be”
  • “[Customer service] Usually very good but with COVID it has made it more difficult”

How We Found the Best Car Insurance Companies

At U.S. News, we’re all about helping people make life’s important decisions. Our college rankings, launched in 1983, set the standard in educational rankings. Our ranking in other fields, like healthcare, government, and the automotive sphere, help people and thought leaders make choices that make lives better. Now we’re continuing to empower you with the information you need to make the right choices for your life with our Best Car Insurance Rankings.

We surveyed 4,806 consumers who filed a car insurance claim or started a new auto insurance policy in the last five years, asking questions about their car insurance company. Of the survey respondents, 252 filed a claim with USAA and 141 started a policy with USAA. These questions covered satisfaction with the ease of filing a claim, customer service, claim status communication, claim resolution, and overall value. In general, questions for consumers who have filed a claim were given more weight than questions for consumers who have only opened a policy. We also asked whether they’d recommend the company and if they planned to renew their policy. We used their responses to build our Best Car Insurance Companies Rankings, as well as our subrankings for best customer service, claims handling, and customer loyalty, and this company profile.

Our Study Rates

To get comparative insurance rates for this study, U.S. News also worked with Quadrant Information Services to analyze a report of insurance rates in all 50 states from most of the largest national car insurance companies, though not every company operates in every state. Quadrant obtained publicly available rate data that car insurers file with state regulators. Our study rates are based on profiles for both male and female drivers aged 25, 35, and 60. Vehicles used include the 2015 Honda Civic, 2015 Toyota RAV4, and 2015 Ford F-150, with annual mileage ranging from 6,000 and 12,000. Three car insurance coverage levels were used, as were credit tiers of good, fair, and poor. Clean driving records and records with one accident, one speeding violation, and one DUI were also used in the calculations of certain driver archetypes.

To get the study rates shown here, we computed the mean rate for male and female drivers ages 25, 35, and 60 who drive 12,000 miles per year, have medium coverage, good credit, and a clean driving record. The rates shown here are for comparative purposes only and should not be considered “average” rates available by individual insurers. Because car insurance rates are based on individual factors, your car insurance rates will differ from the rates shown here.
