Bill Maher Suggests Kids Are Becoming LGBTQ Because It’s “Hip” On ‘Real Time’

Last night on Real Time with Bill Maher, the HBO host tackled a somewhat sensitive topic during his “New Rule” segment of the show,

suggesting the rise of the LGBTQ community is due in part to the fact that it’s trendy.

Maher noted that a recent Gallup poll shows an exponential increase in those who self-identify as LGBTQ and that people are allowed to ask

“It wasn’t that long ago when adults asked a kid ‘what do you want to be when you grow up?’,” he said. “They meant what profession.”

He then mentioned a recent ACLU finding that claimed the controversy about abortion rights affects LGBTQ people more than heterosexual couples.

While acknowledging that we should always be mindful of respecting and protecting others, Maher said,

Someone needs to say it – not everything’s about you. It’s okay to ask questions about something very new.

He then brought up the trend of putting young children on hormone blockers and how Sweden has decided to end the practice.
