Toto Wolff brands flare-throwers 'idiots' as Verstappen claims pole at 2022 Dutch Grand Prix
Toto Wolff has hit out at “a few idiots” in the grandstands at Zandvoort who threw orange flares onto the track during qualifying on Saturday
Mercedes’ team principal said throwing projectiles while cars were lapping the circuit might have had “lethal consequences”.
There were some suggestions the second flare may have been targeted at Mercedes’ seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton
The incidents took the gloss off what was a gripping qualifying session, which eventually saw Red Bull’s runaway championship leader Max Verstappen
Verstappen, who enjoys a 93-point lead in the drivers’ championship and is fast closing in on his second successive title
just edged out the Ferraris of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, with the top three separated by just 0.0092 seconds.
Mercedes were also surprisingly competitive. A week on from their disastrous race at Spa, where their cars were almost two seconds off the pace of Red Bull in qualifying
Hamilton might even have claimed pole with his final run in Q3, only for Verstappen’s teammate Sergio Perez to spin at the final corner
bringing out a yellow flag. Hamilton will start from fourth, with teammate George Russell sixth.
