Celtics vs. Mavericks final score, results: Jayson Tatum’s near triple-double leads Boston to 2024 NBA championship

The Celtics are your 2024 NBA champions.

Boston finished business on its home court, protecting the parquet with a decisive 106-88 win over the Mavericks.

Jayson Tatum brought his best for the close-out game, going for a near-triple-double of 31 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds to finally lead the Celtics over the hump. It was his co-star Jaylen Brown who took home Finals MVP honors, finishing with 21 points, eight rebounds and six assists to win the Bill Russell Trophy.

Boston’s defense kept Luka Doncic (28 points on 25 shots) and Kyrie Irving (15 points on 16 shots) in check, holding Dallas to under 100 points for the fourth time in five games. The result: Confetti raining down on the TD Garden floor.

Celtics vs. Mavericks live updates, highlights from Game 5 in 2024 NBA Finals

Final: Celtics 106, Mavericks 88

11:01 p.m.: The Celtics are your 2024 NBA champions! Boston caps off a dominant postseason run with an 18-point victory in a closeout Game 5.

Jayson Tatum led the way with 31 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds while Jaylen Brown added 21 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

10:55 p.m.: Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving have checked out of the game. The Celtics lead 106-85 with 2:12 remaining.

10:51 p.m.: The Celtics are on the verge of winning their first NBA title since 2008. Joe Mazzulla takes a timeout with 3:10 remaining, Boston leads 106-85.

10:41 p.m.: Jayson Tatum is putting this game to rest. The Celtics star has scored nine points in the fourth quarter to give Boston a 102-78 lead with 4:39 remaining. He’s up to 29 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds — three shy of a triple-double.

End of third quarter: Celtics 86, Mavericks 67

10:27 p.m.: Three quarters are in the books and Celtics fans at TD Garden are starting to feel it.

Jayson Tatum’s got 20 points, 10 assists and six rebounds through three quarters while Jaylen Brown has 17 points, six rebounds and five assists.

For Dallas, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving’s struggles continue. Doncic has 18 points on 8-of-19 shooting while Irving has nine points on 3-of-12 shooting.

Boston is 12 minutes away from banner No. 18.

10:13 p.m.: The Mavericks are hanging around. Dallas trails Boston 82-64 with 4:05 to play in the third. Luka Doncic is starting to play more aggressively with five quick points. Josh Green continues to be an X-factor for Dallas, scoring 14 points off the bench on perfect 5-for-5 shooting from the field.

10:03 p.m.: The Celtics are keeping their foot on the gas. Derrick White and Al Horford 3-pointers have helped extend Boston’s lead to 26, up 78-52 in the first three minutes of the second half.

Halftime: Celtics 67, Mavericks 46

9:45 p.m.: Jayson Tatum shrugged off a slow start in the first quarter, finishing with 16 points, nine assists and zero turnovers in the first half. He and Jaylen Brown (15 points) have completely outplayed Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving.

Doncic has nine points, six rebounds and four assists but hasn’t found any rhythm as a scorer. Irving has five points and five assists on 2-for-8 shooting from the field, falling into the background like he did in the first two games in Boston.

9:37 p.m.: PAYTON PRITCHARD! The Celtics guard hits his second halfcourt heave of the series to send the TD Garden into an absolute frenzy!

9:28 p.m.: The Mavericks have fought back into this one behind a jolt from their role players. Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving have combined for 10 points on 4-for-14 shooting from the field. The rest of the team has 29 points on 12-for-19 shooting from the field. Derrick Jones Jr. is their leading scorer with 10 points. 

Boston leads Dallas 48-39 with just over four minutes to play in the half.

9:17 p.m.: Jayson Tatum is coming alive in the second quarter. He’s already up to 11 points, seven assists and four rebounds. He finished an and-one to put the Celtics up 46-31 with 6:56 remaining in the half.

9:14 p.m.: P.J. Washington sparked a little feud after throwing Kristaps Porzingis to the ground early in the second quarter. The play was ruled a common foul.

End of first quarter: Celtics 28, Mavericks 18

9:05 p.m.: The Celtics closed the first quarter with a bang, rattling off a 9-0 run. Sam Hauser hit a 3 then came up with a steal that led to a Jaylen Brown transition bucket. Jayson Tatum picked P.J. Washington’s pocket and scored in transition going the other way.

8:53 p.m.: Luka Doncic has attacked Kristaps Porzingis on both defensive possessions since checking in, resulting in back-to-back wide-open 3s for Josh Green. Timeout Celtics. Boston leads 16-13 with 3:56 to play in the first.

8:52 p.m.: Kristaps Porzingis has checked into the game with 6:49 to play in the first quarter. This is his first action since Game 2 of the NBA Finals.

8:46 p.m.: Al Horford buries a 3 to get the TD Garden crowd on its feet. Both teams are playing tight early on but the Celtics hold a 9-2 lead with 7:26 to play in the first. Jrue Holiday leads the way for Boston with six points. The Mavericks’ only two points came on a lob from Luka Doncic to Derrick Jones Jr.

8:39 p.m.: Jrue Holiday gets a layup to drop on the first possession and we’re underway!

8:20 p.m.: The Garden exploded when Kristaps Porzingis took the court. This crowd is going to be loud for this one.

6:30 p.m.: The Celtics have upgraded Kristaps Porzingis to “available” for Game 5. Head coach Joe Mazzulla said he is, “Expecting to see [Porzingis] tonight” and added that he is not on a minutes restriction.

A reminder that he was also made available for Boston’s Game 4 loss to the Mavericks but never stepped on the court.
